Brothers and Sisters - After almost 30 years running HadIt.com, I’ve been doing a lot of reflecting. What started as just me trying to help a few veterans navigate these treacherous waters has grown into a massive community. We’ve built a defense against predatory claim sharks and the privatization of the VA. Here is a look back at the last 30 years of our shared fight.
The VA claims system has changed a lot over the last three decades. As HadIt.com approaches its 30th anniversary, our history really tells the story of that evolution. When I founded this platform on January 20, 1997, as a disabled Navy veteran and PTSD survivor, my only goal was to break down the walls of secrecy between the VA and individual claimants. Today, our community is standing strong against complex, legislative threats trying to privatize the system we rely on.
What began as a grassroots peer network has grown right alongside all of you. It’s expanded into this Substack, Tbird’s Quiet Fight, and allowed me to partner with the Veterans Healthcare Policy Institute (VHPI). This milestone is about the 30-year evolution of veterans helping veterans, how we forced the system to listen, and how we are still defending our rightful compensation today.
Fighting the Darkness: Why HadIt.com Started
To really understand what this community has accomplished, you have to remember what the VA claims process was like back in the 1990s. It was a paper-bound nightmare. Claimants were kept in the dark, facing extreme processing delays. During that time, the system was flooded with new claims—like the surge of Hepatitis C infections among Vietnam-era veterans. Before the internet, we had no independent way to research BVA case law, understand the rating schedules, or build a real legal strategy.
We were strictly reliant on navigating the maze completely alone or hoping a physical VSO rep had the time to help us. I realized this lack of transparency was actively harming us. So, on January 20, 1997, I launched HadIt.com under the simple belief that “Knowledge Is Power.”
For decades, we tried different ways to keep the lights on, even transitioning into a non-profit for a while. But after struggling to secure enough funding and staff, I transitioned it back to a traditional LLC so I could keep it running myself. I’ve always wanted this space to be free from corporate capture. That’s why, on February 2, 2026, I announced that HadIt.com is officially 100% ad-free for everyone. The site is funded directly by me, your vital community contributions, forum and Substack subscriptions, and merchandise sales.
Remarkably, throughout its nearly 30-year history, HadIt.com has operated entirely as a “one-woman shop.” I don’t have a dedicated staff. Every bit of growth and impact we’ve had has been driven simply by me learning hard lessons and sharing that knowledge directly with you.
Giving Veterans the Tools to Win
From the start, HadIt.com was different from other internet forums. We kept a strict, no-nonsense focus on the legal and medical mechanics of the VA system. We built specific sub-forums and archives to tackle the hardest parts of disability law. This is how we empowered each other:
Independent Medical Opinions (IMO) & Nexus Strategies: We taught veterans how to bridge the gap between their current diagnoses and their in-service events. We broke down what civilian doctors needed to put in Nexus letters and DBQs to actually win a claim against the VA’s adversarial exams.
Case Law Search Tools: We figured out how to search past BVA and Court of Appeals decisions, allowing lay veterans to cite legal precedents and force regional offices to follow federal regulations.
Evidentiary Archives: We hosted real, declassified documentary evidence for specific military operations—like the Iran War 2026 archive for blast overpressure claims—so veterans wouldn’t get denied just because the VA said there was a “lack of in-service documentation.”
The “Ask The Geeks” Initiative: When the VA transitioned to electronic portals like eBenefits, we were right there providing technical support so our older and severely disabled veterans wouldn’t get left behind.
Even the academic world took notice. The William & Mary Law Review cited us as a vital resource for veterans navigating the appeals process, and law clinics use our forums to find long-lost “battle buddies” for lay witness statements.
Safeguarding Our Own
As the VA system got more complicated, predatory industries swooped in to exploit vulnerable veterans. We didn’t just educate; we actively protected our own.
Eradicating the “Claim Sharks”
You all know about the unaccredited “claim sharks”—the highly unethical companies charging illegal, exorbitant fees to “help” with disability claims. On HadIt.com, we don’t tolerate them. We actively purge posts promoting non-accredited providers, cutting off their marketing and keeping our site a safe haven. It’s a commitment to veteran protection that I carry over to my work investigating these sharks with VHPI experts like Paul Sullivan.
The 2015 “Rules of Behavior” Fight
We also haven’t been afraid to take the VA head-on. Back in 2015, during the rollout of the VBMS electronic claims system, the VA tried to force veterans’ attorneys to sign “Rules of Behavior” that stripped away client confidentiality.
While the big VSOs quietly went along with it, independent advocates saw the danger. We used HadIt.com to amplify the legal challenges brought by veterans’ rights attorneys. We took the fight to the court of public opinion, and the grassroots pressure forced the VA Compensation Director to publicly reverse the policy and protect our attorney-client privilege.
Taking the Fight to the Policy Level
As the veteran population changed and the Global War on Terror generation merged with our Vietnam-era veterans, the political attacks on the VA shifted. Conservative think tanks started aggressive campaigns to dismantle the VA’s direct-care infrastructure and target our disability compensation to save the government money.
I realized that helping veterans with individual claims wasn’t going to be enough if the very foundation of the VA was being legislatively dismantled. That’s why I launched Tbird’s Quiet Fight. I wanted a place to share the parts of this journey that go deeper, focusing on truth, resistance, and the systemic threats we face. It’s raw. It’s real. And it’s 100% me. This work led to my partnership with the Veterans Healthcare Policy Institute (VHPI), where I collaborate with analysts like Suzanne Gordon to expose the threats against the VHA.
The 2025 SVAC Hearing and the Attack on Presumptives
The biggest target on our backs right now is “presumptive” service connections. For decades, veterans exposed to combat toxins faced impossible burdens of proof. It took the Blue Water Navy Vietnam Veterans Act and the PACT Act to legally force the VA to presume our illnesses were caused by our toxic deployments.
But organizations pushing the Project 2025 mandate have targeted these presumptions for total elimination, claiming veterans are being improperly compensated. If they roll these back, millions of veterans will lose their financial compensation and their VHA healthcare eligibility.
This reached a boiling point on October 29, 2025, during a Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee hearing that was weaponized by a sensationalized Washington Post hit piece. They tried to paint the compensation system as full of exaggerated claims, arguing that disability benefits “trap veterans in a disability identity” and incentivize idleness.
We fought back hard. On Tbird’s Quiet Fight and VHPI, we tore apart their statistics: “Take 25 years of claims data, find the worst outliers, ignore 6.9 million legitimate beneficiaries, and boom—you’ve got your fraud narrative.” Even the VA Inspector General testified there is no evidence of mass fraud among veterans. And to anyone who says disability compensation steals our purpose: my compensation provided the vital stability I needed to build platforms that have helped hundreds of thousands of you secure your legal rights.
The Privatization Threat Map
In February 2026, I put together the definitive “VA Privatization Threat Map” for VHPI. It aggregates 14 different threats to show exactly how they are sabotaging the VA. They are intentionally starving the VA of operational capacity—cutting 40,000 staff, stripping union rights, and blowing $37 billion on a failed electronic health record system.
They are manufacturing a crisis to create an “Excuse Factory,” which gives them the political cover to route $48 billion out of the VA and into private Community Care.
Why Community Care Hurts Your Claims
Working with the VA’s own “Red Team” roundtable, we proved that runaway community care spending is an existential threat. But more importantly for us, pushing veterans into the private sector actively destroys your ability to win disability claims:
Nexus Documentation: VA clinicians are trained to document how your injuries connect to your military service. Private doctors diagnose and treat, but they don’t know how to build the legal evidentiary bridge required by a VA rater.
DBQs: The VHA uses standardized Disability Benefits Questionnaires. Private community providers don’t, meaning your outside medical records will likely lack the highly specific legal language you need to win your claim.
Military Culture: VA doctors understand the connection between deployment trauma, toxic exposure, and secondary conditions. Private doctors have no mandatory training in military sexual trauma or toxic exposure history.
When legislators force you out of the VA, they are destroying the evidentiary pipeline you need to secure your medical documentation. Treating the private sector as our only option will just result in massive claim denials down the road.
We Keep Marching On
The last 30 years have proved one thing: when veterans get together and share information, we can beat massive bureaucratic red tape. We built the roadmap to help hundreds of thousands of veterans win their rightful benefits.
But the failures of the VA are no longer just passive incompetence—they are active, ideological sabotage. This is the work I love, and I’m deeply grateful to serve. If in some small way this community has helped even one brother or sister, then it’s a success.
Thank you for being part of HadIt.com and The Quiet Fight. The battles continue, but together, we’ll keep marching on — one veteran helping another.
