The Gist: Donald Trump brags about “giving back” his $400,000 presidential salary — as if it’s some grand sacrifice. The truth? That sum doesn’t even cover the cost of one of his golf weekends. Meanwhile, Medicaid cuts, cancer research shortfalls, and shredded safety nets are justified in the name of “too much debt.” Debt is a problem when it’s sick kids — not when it’s tee time.
Trump wants credit for the headline — a rich man giving back his salary. But it’s a con job. His golf trips cost taxpayers millions per outing. The GAO pegged early Mar-a-Lago weekends at around $13.6 million each. Independent watchdogs put the average golf weekend around $3–4 million.
One golf weekend burns through more than his entire yearly salary. He gives it back with one hand — and takes ten times more with the other.
And unlike other presidents, he goes to his own properties. That means every time he golfs, we’re not just footing the bill — we’re also padding his pockets. It’s not just golf. It’s a racket.
So we’re told there isn’t enough for Medicaid. That kids in cancer wards need to brace for less. That families living on the edge must do with fewer benefits because “the debt is too high.” But somehow there’s room in the budget for helicopters, motorcades, and entire entourages to whisk the president off to play 18 holes at his own club — where our tax dollars become his income.
Maybe little girls will have to get fewer dolls. Maybe the elderly will have to get less care. But one old man? He will never have to get fewer golf trips — not on our dime.
And the kicker: trillions in permanent tax cuts for the wealthy — the same wealthy who already game the system to pay too little. We’re told there’s no money for you, but endless room for them.
This isn’t just hypocrisy. Obscene. Disgusting. Repugnant. Pornographic. Choose your word. None of them feel strong enough.
If the national debt is so crushing that we must cut food aid, medical care, and housing support, how do we justify golf trips that dwarf a president’s salary? How do we defend corporate tax breaks that balloon the deficit?
Fewer doctors, fewer meals, fewer safety nets — but never fewer golf trips. That’s the deal they’re selling us.
And while I’m at it? How about less time building your Potemkin village and campaigning for a Nobel — and more time making life better for the working-class Americans you promised so much to.
